Every September the same problem lands on Dubai parents: the kitchen table is no longer a homework desk, and the bed is definitely not a study chair. A proper study corner does two things at once — it protects a growing child's back and eyes, and it quietly tells them that this is where focus happens.
You don't need a designer's budget or a big villa room. A good child's workstation in Dubai comes down to three pieces: a desk the right size, a chair that adjusts, and somewhere to put the clutter. Here's how to choose each, and which of our options fit.
1. The desk: smaller than you think
The most common mistake is buying an adult desk "so it lasts." A 160 cm desk swallows a seven-year-old and pushes the keyboard and books out of reach. For primary-school children a 120 × 60 cm top is the sweet spot; for a small bedroom, a 90 × 60 cm desk fits against almost any wall.
What actually matters:
- Height around 75 cm — standard, and correct once the chair is adjusted to the child (more on that below).
- A matte, light finish — oak or white reflects less glare from a ceiling light than dark gloss.
- A cable grommet if there will be a tablet or laptop charging on the desk — it keeps cables off the floor.

Rule of thumb: when your child sits at the desk, their forearms should rest flat on the top with elbows at about 90°. If shoulders lift up, the desk is too high; if they hunch down, it's too low.
2. The chair: adjustable beats "cute"
Themed chairs look adorable and last one growth spurt. The single most important feature for a child is height adjustment — a gas lift so the seat rises as they grow, plus a backrest that supports the lower back. Wheels and a swivel are fine (kids love them); what you don't need is an expensive "executive" leather throne.
Look for:
- Seat-height adjustment so their feet reach the floor (or a footrest) with knees at ~90°.
- A breathable mesh or fabric back — Dubai rooms get warm, and mesh keeps a child cooler than PVC.
- A firm five-star base on castors for stability.

3. Storage: one drawer unit changes everything
Homework lives in a permanent state of explosion — pencils, rulers, half-finished projects. A single mobile drawer that rolls under the desk does more for tidiness than any shelf, because everything has a home within arm's reach and the desktop stays clear.

4. The two things furniture can't fix
- Light. Position the desk so the window is to the side, not behind the screen (glare) or in front (shadows on the page). Add a warm desk lamp for evening homework.
- Distance. Screen at arm's length, top of the screen at eye level. A cheap laptop stand plus a separate keyboard beats a laptop flat on the desk for posture.
